NOCN approved centre. This course leads to NOCN Solar PV Installation for Roofers — certificated by NOCN, one of the UK’s leading awarding organisations for construction and the built environment.

Course Overview

Our Solar PV Installation Course teaches you to install solar panels safely and to standard. You’ll cover how solar panels work, safe working at height, handling panels and electrical safety, and communicating with customers. On the practical side, you’ll install both retrofit and in-roof systems, working to manufacturers’ instructions — including safely isolating systems and leaving the cabling in the correct condition for an electrician to complete the installation.

  • Working safely with panels, including safe electrical working and lifting

Installation

  • Design considerations — measuring and marking up, and wind and fire safety
  • Installing both in-roof and retrofit panels (with hands-on demonstration)
  • Safely isolating panels, connecting in series/parallel, and the role of the inverter
  • Ensuring the roof side of an installation is safe for an electrician to complete

Course Duration

Three days, 09:00 to 16:30 each day.

Plus three short online modules — abrasive wheels, electrical safety and working at height awareness — included in the price and completed in your own time. If you already hold those certificates, skip them.

We changed this course from five days to three in response to employers who would rather have their installer back on site sooner. Same qualification, same certificates, same price — the health and safety elements are now delivered online instead of in the workshop.

About the three online modules

Working at height is CPD, Gatehouse Awards and IIRSM approved. Electrical safety is IOSH and IIRSM approved. Abrasive wheels is CPD and IIRSM approved. All three issue a CPD certificate.

They cover the knowledge and awareness side, which is the right level for the supervised practical work you do with us — our training rig rises to 1.8 metres and you are with a tutor throughout. They are not practical, assessed competence training. If your day-to-day work needs more than awareness level at height, or you mount and change abrasive wheels yourself, those are separate tickets you will need to source. Ask us and we will point you at them.

Where It Runs

This course runs at our adult training centre: Unit 6, Price Street Business Centre, Price Street, Birkenhead, Wirral CH41 4JQ — a separate building from our schools and 16–18 provision, so adult learners train alongside other adults.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications required. A reasonable level of physical fitness and a head for heights are essential. Candidates must be 18 or over.

Certification

NOCN Solar PV Installation for Roofers. If required, you can also achieve Working at Height, Abrasive Wheels, Ladder Safety and Electrical Safety certification.
